Muzzi Moscato Panettone: A Slow-Leavened Italian Christmas Classic

Some Christmas traditions arrive quietly, wrapped in paper and ribbon, and stay for good. In Italy, the tall golden dome of a panettone on the breakfast table is one of them. This season we are delighted to welcome the Muzzi Moscato Panettone 1kg to House of AnLi: a slow-leavened, naturally made panettone that brings a genuine taste of Italian festive baking to Singapore homes.

Why the Muzzi Moscato Panettone is worth slowing down for

Muzzi is an Italian pastry house founded in the 18th century in Foligno, in Umbria. It began with an aniseed marzipan recipe that won favour with the nobility of the day, and grew over the centuries into celebration breads, panforte and panettone. That long history shows in the patience behind this recipe.

The Moscato panettone is crafted through a 72-hour process. The most important stage is the refreshing of the sourdough starter, which is worked with flour and water so that it stays alive and active. This is what gives the panettone its signature softness and its gentle, natural rise. It is a world away from quick, mass-produced festive cakes, and you can taste the difference in the open, feathery crumb.

Raisins soaked in Moscato d'Asti

What makes this panettone special is the fruit. The raisins come from Turkey, from grapes that are hand-picked, naturally sun-dried and carefully selected for their colour and size. They are then soaked for two days in Moscato d'Asti D.O.C.G. from the Pico Maccario winery, so each one carries a soft, floral sweetness through the bread.

Unlike many versions, this traditional recipe has no syrup soak. The result is sweet yet delicate, letting the butteriness of the dough and the perfume of the Moscato-soaked fruit come through clearly. If you have always found panettone a little heavy, this is the one to change your mind.

How to serve panettone, the Italian way and beyond

In Italy, slices of panettone are typically enjoyed for breakfast through the holiday season, alongside a strong coffee. A few ideas for enjoying yours at home:

  • A slow festive breakfast. Cut generous wedges from the dome rather than thin slices, and serve with espresso or a milky cappuccino. A little warmth brings out the butter and the aroma of the fruit.
  • Afternoon tea with friends. Pair a slice with a fragrant black or white tea. Our Tea & Gourmet collection has Mariage Frères teas that sit beautifully alongside the Moscato notes.
  • A light Christmas dessert. After a long lunch, a thin slice with a spoonful of mascarpone or fresh berries is just enough sweetness to finish the meal.
  • Boxing Day treats. Any leftovers can be toasted the next morning, or turned into a quick bread-and-butter pudding.

Styling tips for a panettone centrepiece

A panettone deserves to be seen. Rather than slicing it in the kitchen, bring it to the table whole and cut it in front of your guests. A few styling ideas:

  • Stand it on a cake stand or a wooden board, surrounded by a few sprigs of greenery, cinnamon sticks or clementines for a seasonal still life.
  • Keep the palette simple. White or natural stoneware, crisp linen napkins and a pair of tapers let the golden crust become the hero.
  • Add a serrated bread knife and small dessert plates so guests can help themselves through the afternoon.
  • For a festive brunch, set it beside a jug of fresh juice, a pot of coffee and a bowl of fruit for an easy, generous spread.

You will find tableware, candles and decorations to complete the look in our Christmas collection.

A Christmas gift that feels personal

Few gifts are as warmly received as good food, and a beautifully presented panettone is a lovely way to say thank you to a host, a neighbour, a client or a teacher. Its 1kg size makes it perfect for sharing with a family over the holidays. Pair it with a box of Mariage Frères tea or a pretty set of espresso cups and you have a thoughtful hamper in minutes.

As it is a seasonal arrival, quantities are limited, so we recommend ordering early for gifting. To keep it at its best, store it away from direct sunlight, heat and humidity.
